Mental Energy is Limited. It Cannot Be Created Or Destroyed, Only Changed.
We, as humans, have a limited amount of focus.
Each and every elemental input in our life requires an exchange.
How do we ensure that we get a fair trade at the end of the day?
Imagine a power socket on the wall. We can plug in a power board to host extra appliances.
If we run out of space, we can add an extra power board.
There is, however, a limit to how many devices you can run from a single circuit with limited electricity.
If you plug too many appliances into a single power socket, you trigger the circuit breaker and completely lose all electricity.
It may only take a small spike in extra electricity to push the limit and trip the power before activating the failsafe.
If we are not conscious of how we allocate our energy, we risk tripping our minds and shutting down in a similarly spectacular way.
Guard Your Mind
Every thought you have, every action you take, and even all the external stimulus you overlook occupies a space in your mind.
If you fill your life/mind with meaningless information and garbage, you, unfortunately, waste your limited energy and resources.
All the people that we deal with in day-to-day life, and ourselves, only have a small amount of mental space at any given time.
Illustrated by the fact that it is challenging and near impossible to hold multiple thoughts in our minds simultaneously.
We don’t always control what we spend most of our time thinking about, partly due to our surroundings and environment.
The external distractions can be a result of how you have engineered your life. It may be why many people recommend having a clean desk before starting to work to help clear the mind.
A basic change in your environment can affect your mental state.
Everything leaves a small impact and takes some processing power, from our daily content intake to the barrage of marketing exposure.
We need to become then vigilant when watching our environments, and more importantly, the inputs and outputs of our thoughts and conversations.
How To Shift Your Focus
You have the power to change the energy designation of your mind through conscious efforts.
Can you divert your thinking pattern?
Ask yourself if the thought you are having is useful and how is it behaving. Is it serving you?
You can rewire your immediate thought pattern by thinking of an open-ended question such as “What is the best possible future I Can Imagine”.
Going deep into the detail about your prophesied dreams will allow you to draw your energy away from less productive thinking as you allocate more thinking capital to a problem that will benefit you.
Can you re-balance life energy by changing your habits?
Audit your time and Monitor how you spend it to decide if you are spending it wisely.
Then, get rid of the habits that do not serve you.
Be wary of the feedback loops caused by energy-consuming leeches.
You might know someone stuck in such a feedback loop who hates their job but feels too busy to go and find different work.
Each time you free yourself from an unproductive thought or habit, you open a space for energy to flow.
If you can practice taking control of your energy, you can generally become more intentional about how you think and act.
Unplug
Certain things will help you in your journey to reallocate your energy capacity:
Avoid Toxic Conversations with Energy Sucking Vampires
Reduce Your Intake of Content (News, Drama, Social Media)
Choose Less Stimulating Activities such as Walking or Reading over Browsing Youtube and Netflix
Take a Break From Technology and go to open spaces
Clear Your Mind
Energy is abundant all around us.
Some of this energy has no productive use, while some can add meaning and purpose to our lives.
Life is too short to let others decide how you optimise your energy, so when you feel overwhelmed by a cluttered existence, unplug from the madness and reallocate your mental energy expenditure.
You can shape and craft your mental energy by changing your thoughts and habits.
